Viruses can only replicate themselves by infecting a host meaning they can not reproduce on their own.
Viruses cannot reproduce on their own and require a host organism to do it for them. This is one reason viruses are not considered to be alive is the TRUE statement.
What is a Virus?
- A virus is an infectious microbe consisting of a segment of nucleic acid (either DNA or RNA) surrounded by a protein coat. A virus cannot replicate alone; instead, it must infect cells and use components of the host cell to make copies of itself.
- The human virome is the total collection of viruses in and on the human body. Viruses in the human body may infect both human cells and other microbes such as bacteria (as with bacteriophages). Some viruses cause disease, while others may be asymptomatic.
- Due to their simple structure, viruses cannot move or even reproduce without the help of an unwitting host cell.
- Viruses are not made out of cells, they can't keep themselves in a stable state, they don't grow, and they can't make their own energy. Even though they definitely replicate and adapt to their environment, viruses are more like androids than real living organisms.
