Energy waves are the energy waves that travel away from the point of earthquake’s focus in all direction. These waves travel at a much faster rate as compared to the rupture itself. There are mainly four types of Seimic waves  (namely P - Compressional Primary Longitudinal, S – Shear secondary transverse, L – Love surface waves and R – Rayleigh surface waves) whose pattern of movement is similar to the movement of water waves thereby causing them to spread in the outward direction.
