For many, Shiloh was a wake up call as to how bad, bloody, and deadly the Civil War could get. The most alarming, for many, was that over 23,000 died at Shiloh and the creek ran red with blood. This was a far cry from the start of the war with the First Battle of Bull Run when people came along with picnics. From Shiloh, the war got more deadly and both the North and South had to reevaluate their overall strategy.
