To guard the emperor in the afterlife, an army of life-size terra cotta soldiers, archers, horses, and chariots was stationed in a military formation near Emperor Qin's tomb.
Why Terracotta Army was built?
When Qin Shi Huang assumed the throne of the Qin State in 246 BC, he ordered the construction of his mausoleum to begin, according to Records of the Grand Historian. The Terracotta Army's purpose was to "guard" the entire mausoleum, and Qin Shi Huang felt that the army could defend him after death.
The terracotta soldier is depicted above. It was discovered in China in 1974. While excavating, a peasant uncovered it.
