This is considered indirect characterization.
Explanation: You're giving the character more of a personality, and showing the reader what kind of a person they are, but it is done so via their actions, and how they react to certain situations. Kinda like in The Cat in the Hat. The cat is doing crazy stuff, like balancing on balls in the house, juggling plates, etc. This shows that he's reckless, and is perhaps a bit impulsive. He's zany, and likes to have fun, but often disregards the danger around him, and doesn't listen to others.
