Greenhouse effect refers to the gradual rise in the temperature of the earth owing to the presence of certain gases in the atmosphere. These gases are called greenhouse gases. Examples of these gases are, nitrogen I oxide, water vapor, carbon dioxide and methane.
These gases mentioned are able to trap infrared rays causing them not to escape into outer space. As these gases continue to build up in the atmosphere, the temperature of the earth rises steadily leading to climate change and unfortunate occurrences such as melting of polar ice caps and flooding.
