Personification
Personification is a metaphor and a literary device that takes place when a thing, idea, abstract qualities, nature, emotions or event is given human characteristics. This is used in the excerpt when referring to the "thoughts". The narrator gives the process of thinking itself the characteristic of expressing certain ideas, which is an attribute of humans.
