The Glorious Revolution was the replacement of Catholic King James II by his protestant daughter Mary II and her husband William III, Prince of Orange. It was the first invasion to England since 1066 and marked the end of Catholic rule in England.

The news were celebrated in the colonies. Colonists were hoping the change would decrease the tight control James II had had on them, particularly since the creation of the Dominion of New England. The revolution gave rise to the Boston Revolt of 1689, against the authorities of James II's former government. These events reflect America's connection to England, but also its dependence to it, and the very limited agency that the colonists had to determine their own affairs.
