Limitations of dichotomous keys:

1. It is only useful when the organism that is being identified was or is a part of organisms that are part of the key. An organisms is usually misidentified if it does not belong to the key.

2. It’s a complex mechanism of organism identification and may leads to chain of worng interpretations.

3. The characteristics which are devised to identify an organism might not be a distinct feature of the species already exiting in the dichotomous key.

4. Dependency on physical characteristics, does not take into account genetic characteristics.

Dichotomous keys are the scientific tool that are used in the identification of organisms based on the observable characteristics. It consists of series of statements to identify the correct identification of an organism. It has some limitations such as misidentification, complexity, and dependency on physical environment.

The limitation of dichotomous keys are:

  • Dichotomous keys can be used only when the organisms are part of the key. It can lead to misinterpretation of the organisms.
  • The key holds the series of statements of observable traits, thus, can lead to missing of a trait and misidentification of the organism.
  • The study of phenotypic characteristics are not accountable of genotypic traits.
  • The traits used to identify an organism may not be a distinctive feature and can already be existing in the key.

Therefore, some of the limitations are misinterpretation, complexity, and genotypic traits.
