This experiment helps to determine the role of the cell membrane, sort the molecules that come in and out thanks to the semi-permeability of the cell membrane and the presence of transmembrane transporters.
A good example to illustrate the functioning of this kind of membrane is dialysis, this is done through a dialyzing membrane that only passes small molecules (that we want to eliminate). Cells and large molecules such as proteins remain trapped in their compartments.
