The summit of Mauna Kea is approximately 13,796 ft above sea level. What is the distance from the summit to the horizon, rounded to the nearest mile? Assume that the distance from the center of the earth to any point on the earth's surface is 4,000 miles.

Respuesta :

You use The  Tangent /secant theorem

let x be the distance to the horizon

Work in miles:-  13,796 ft = 13796 / 5280 =  2.6129 miles

x^2 = 2.6129 *  (2.6129 + 8000) =  20910

x =  145 miles to nearest mile

The distance from the summit to the horizon, rounded to the nearest mile is 4,003 miles.

What is Unit conversion?

Unit conversion is a way of converting some common units into another without changing their real value. for, example, 1 centimetre is equal to 10 mm, though the real measurement is still the same the units and numerical values have been changed.

A mile is equal to 5280 feet. therefore, we can write,

1 mile = 5280 feet

1 feet = 1/5280 mile

Given that the summit of Mauna Kea is approximately 13,796 ft above sea level. Therefore, the distance of the summit to sea level in miles will be,

Distance of the summit to sea level in miles = 13,796/5,280 miles

                                                                       = 2.6128 miles

Further, it is given that the distance from the center of the earth to any point on the earth's surface is 4,000 miles. Therefore, the distance from the summit to the horizon, rounded to the nearest mile is,

Distance from the summit to the horizon

= 4,000 miles + 2.6128 miles

= 4,003 miles

Hence, the distance from the summit to the horizon, rounded to the nearest mile is 4,003 miles.
