In the 1840s and 1850s, IMMIGRANT groups gravitated to the northern democratic party due to exclusion and discrimination by other parties. Most immigrants gravitated to the expansion of the Democratic party and this immigrant vote helped boost the standing of the Democrat Polk in the election of 1844.
