The Problem
Eco-Friendly Builders
Your boss has moved you to a brand new city in order to build a new, state-of-the-art office facility for
your company. The city requires all new construction to have the least amount of
impact on the
environment.
The Challenge
Design a state-of-the-art office building that has the least environmental impact, uses multiple energy
sources, and produces the greatest benefit at the lowest cost.
Criteria and Constraints
Your project must include two distinct energy sources that can be harvested in your region.
Energy sources are limited to solar, wind, geothermal, nuclear, tidal, petroleum, coal, and
hydroelectricity.
• Design decisions must be based upon genuine geographical and environmental data for your city
or region as well as availability of resources and energy options.
• Your final product must include justification for why one energy source was not chosen.
.
Your building must be 10,000 square feet spread across one or two stories.
Design elements must include and are limited to roofing, exterior siding, windows or natural
lighting, indoor bulb lighting, flooring, and interior and exterior plant decoration.
• Indoor bulb lighting choices are limited to fluorescent, incandescent, halogen, LED, or solar.
Flooring choices are limited to hardwood, laminate, tile, stained concrete, or carpet.
.
An assessment of how the building will affect the sustainability of human populations and
biodiversity in the area must be included.
