SCENARIO 1
You take off in a Boeing 777 from Honolulu, Hawaii, bound for Seattle, Washington. It is a warm 75°F when
you take off, and the altimeter
setting is 30.22.
As you climb, you pass 18,000 feet. In U.S. airspace, Federal Aviation Regulations require all aircraft flying
above 18,000 feet to set their
altimeter setting to 29.92. You set your altimeter to 29.92, but you notice
your
inexperienced co-pilot has
forgotten to reset theirs.
Watching your altimeter, you level off at your assigned altitude of 39,000 feet. Your co-pilot is startled, and
tells you you're at the wrong altitude.
QUESTION-If your co-pilot is looking at their altimeter with the wrong altimeter setting, at what altitude
does your co-pilot think you are? Show how you arrived
at your answer.
