Introduction:
In the 1930’s, before World War II, there was a noticeable increase in outward aggression toward other regions and countries by authoritarian nations such as Germany, Italy and Japan. By 1938, Germany was threatening to invade Czechoslovakia. The British needed to decide if they were going to appease Hitler or oppose Germany’s continued aggressive expansion. In this assignment you will read 5 documents and use those documents to explain the pros and cons of appeasing Germany as well as determine whether or not appeasement was a good policy for England in 1938.
1. Scroll down past the directions and Essay Outline and read Documents A-E. Use the documents, the textbook and the lesson recordings on appeasement to answer the Document Based Question.
DBQ: Was Appeasement a Good Policy for England in 1938?

2. Write Your Essay (50 points): Submit on a new Word Document in MLA Format
Use the outline below to write a 5-paragraph essay in which you use the documents provided to give a detailed explanation of the pros and cons of the appeasement policy and answer the Document Based Question above. Paragraphs should be 6-8 sentences each.

Essay Outline:

Paragraph 1: Introduction
• Hook sentence
• Define appeasement in terms of the appeasement policy followed by many nations in the leadup to WWII.
• Briefly state the fact that there were individuals on both side of the argument
• Thesis: clearly state whether or not appeasement was a good policy for England in 1938 and why.
Paragraph 2:
• Identify and explain one argument against appeasement using one of the Documents below.
o Include a topic sentence in which you identify author, the date it was written/spoken, the location (if applicable), and indicate that the author was against appeasement.
o Explain why the author is historically significant and why his opinion on the topic is credible
o Use one quote (1-2 lines max) that reflects his main argument
o Explain why he was against appeasement in your own words (1-2 sentences)
Paragraph 3:

o Include a topic sentence in which you identify author, the date it was written/spoken, the location (if applicable), and indicate that the author was for appeasement.
o Explain why the author is historically significant and why his opinion on the topic is credible
o Use one quote (1-2 lines max) that reflects his main argument
o Explain why he was for appeasement in your own words (1-2 sentences)
Paragraph 4:
• Clearly state whether or not appeasement was a good policy for England in 1938.
• Explain which authors made the better argument and why
• Explain which authors were not convincing and why
Paragraph 5:
• Conclusion
• Restate the thesis
• Summarize major points made throughout the essay that support the thesis.
