In Module 2, we read an article by Dr. Sulmasy about when is it justifiable to render a patient unconscious. In this article, he discussed the Principle of Double Effect. For your case discussion, apply the Principle of Double Effect to this case below. Be sure that in your answer you explain the Principle of Double Effect by listing the criteria and briefly explaining each of them and then explain how this case meets the different criteria of the principle. Details: A woman and her husband are excited because she just learned she is pregnant. They have five boys at home, and they are all eager to welcome this new baby. At her first visit to her OB, she is 9 weeks pregnant. But after the examination and pap smear, her OB sadly informs her that she has uterine cancer. After a biopsy for staging, she has Stage III cancer. She is going to need chemotherapy/radiation now. If that is unsuccessful, she may also need a hysterectomy. The OB says that this cancer is highly aggressive and will spread quickly so they must act now. There is no time to delay treatment until 22-24 weeks when the baby could likely survive outside of the womb. The OB tells her that there are potential risks to the baby with the chemotherapy and radiation, explaining that while it is possible the baby could be minimally impacted, it is also possible that there could be birth defects or even death. It is difficult to know the outcomes. The OB discusses that some doctors would also offer an abortion as an option, but the parents interject that that is not an option on the table for them. The parents understand the risks and want to continue the pregnancy and start the chemotherapy and radiation. Explain how this case is an example of how we can apply the Principle of Double Effect.
