Clara Barton may have been a timid child, but she lived a life of great
courage, defying expectations to do things no woman or man had ever done.
Clara found her calling early in life. When she was ten, her brother fell from
the roof of a barn and was severely injured. Clara was responsible for caring
for him. She learned to give him medication and care for his wounds. Even
when doctors gave up, Clara did not, and her brother recovered. This
experience gave Clara a love for nursing and caretaking.
