When scientist Adam Zeman encountered a patient who was unable to visualize things, he decided to investigate the condition. The patient's eyes worked fine, but whenever he tried to picture a scene in his mind, he came up blankāas if his "mind's eye" was blind. Finding no similar cases in the medical literature, Zeman published a paper about his patient's mysterious condition. A reporter subsequently wrote an article about it. Several people recognized their own condition in the article and then contacted Zeman. The condition finally received a name in 2015, aphantasia. Zeman's work was a source of reassurance; many people who suffered from the previously unnamed condition were relieved to find that they were not alone.
