The Secret Herb Garden
"Are you sure no one saw you coming this way?" Jack asked.
"Yes, I'm sure, although I did notice your grandpa on my way here—can't be sure if he paid attention to us," Ashley said.
"No, Mr. Hanson was too busy hatching plans about how to procure tickets to the Knick's game to notice us," Tim reassured as the three friends gathered in Jack's kitchen.
"Here, I managed to bring this book from grandma's house—take it!" Ashley shoved the book into Joyce's hand. "It has the instructions on how to plant your own herb garden on page 89. I know it will work because I've seen Grandma's beautiful garden. Did all of you get all the stuff I asked you to get? Be careful with the book, Tim. Don't stain it, or Grandma will be upset with me if she finds the book in bad condition."
"Relax, Ashley, we've been friends for a long time, and I know how much Grandma Joan loves her books and her garden," Tim replied.
"Here, drink some lemonade," Ashley offered. "I made it just before coming to this meeting. Interestingly, I learned the recipe for the lemonade from the same book."
"OK, let's get to business," Jack began. "The book says we need to choose a sunny windowsill to pot our herbs."
"We already have that. The window that faces south will be the best for the garden we plant," Tim said and added, "And here are the mason jars from my room."
"The book says we should first layer it with pebbles and then add soil on top," Ashley read while Jack placed the pebbles in the jar and proceeded to pot the soil. "Now, we are supposed to add the seeds and cover them with some more soil and sprinkle some water twice daily."
"Great, we are done! Now let's arrange these jars on the windowsill and wait for Mr. Hanson to find it." Tim said.
"I'm sure Grandpa will simply love this garden!" Jack squealed as he washed his hands.
