How did you do analyzing the characters' interactions on the previous page? Shortly after the Eynsford Hill’s arrive at Mrs. Higgins's home, Eliza appears and is announced to the others. This is Eliza’s first attempt to pass herself off as a lady of high society. As you will see in the scene, it isn’t long until Eliza slips back into her informal language, causing various reactions from the guests. As you read or listen to this excerpt from Act 3, use the attached worksheet to analyze the reactions of the different characters and identify how these interactions help communicate the themes of the play. Begin by identifying examples of Eliza’s speech that show her as a high-society woman. Next, look for examples of her speech when she reverts back to her old way of speaking. Once you have identified Eliza’s speech, analyze the reactions of the characters to her. In the second column of the activity, list the word or words that best describe the character's reaction to Eliza. Finally, in the last column, describe what the characters are thinking and why the character responds as he or she does. Once you have completed the worksheet, respond to the question provided, discussing how the scene develops Shaw’s themes regarding social class and its customs and manners. Turn this assignment in to be graded. Attached is the rubric your teacher will use to evaluate your worksheet and response.
