When WWI began in Europe in 1914, many Americans wanted the United States to
stay out of the conflict, supporting President Woodrow Wilson's policy of strict and
impartial neutrality. Why did President Wilson want the US to remain neutral?
O He was worried that Adolf Hitler might plan direct attacks on the US if we were to join the
Allies.
O Wilson was firmly opposed to war, and believed that the key aim was to ensure peace, not
only for the United States but across the world.
O The thought was if the US joined on the side of Germany and Britain, Russia may end up
using their new atomic bomb on us.
