Meet Janelle. She recently opened a social media account. She loves talking to new people and accepts
the dozens of friend requests she gets. She even starts chatting with a few people she has never met in
real life.
Janelle starts getting close to one of her new online friends, Erik. She thinks Erik is really fun and cool.
They chat almost every day, sharing how their day was and other information. Erik asks Janelle about her
family, date of birth, phone number, and where she lives. Janelle shares this information with Erik. When
Erik asks her about her weekend plans, Janelle shares that she and her family are traveling out of town.
Janelle thinks she can trust Erik.
A few days go by, and Janelle leaves with her family for the weekend trip. After returning, Janelle learns
that someone has broken into her family’s home and stolen electronic items such as the TV and
computers. Already worried, Janelle also gets a message that money has been taken from her bank
account. Janelle is upset and tries to contact Erik. More than a day goes by, and Erik still doesn't answer.
