Many things can cause a sudden change in someone's life. In both texts it shows
how the protagonist's life was changes for the better using literary devices. In the
drama," A Christmas Carol, Scrooge and Marley, Act One" by Israel Horovitz and the
short story "Thank You Ma'm" by Langston Hughes the authors use a character living a
bad life and then are given another chance to change it
In the drama "A Christmas Carol: Scrooge and Marley, Act one, Israel Horovitz
uses flashbacks to show a sudden change in Scrooge's life. According to the text
Scrooge states "No, no. I should like to be able to say a word or two to my clerk just
now! That's all (Horovitz, 255, 83) This proves that the flashback of Fezziwig's
kindness to his employees made him regret the way that he treated Cratchit and he now
wants to change his ways. The text also states "You fooll Mindless loon! You fool
(Horovitz, 257, 120) This quote shows that he wishes he had given his ex fiancee more
attention than giving it all to his money. I
In the short story Thank You Ma'm' the author Langston Hughes uses symbolism
to show the sudden change in Roger's life. The text states Then we'll eat," said the
woman, 1 beleve your hungry or been hungry to try to snatch my packet
book (Hughes, 317, 30) This evidence shows that Roger is hungry and doesn't have
many people to take care of him so he feels that he needs to live a bad life to get by
The text also states' wanted a pair of blue suede shoes," said the boy. "Well you didn't
have to snatch my pocket book to get some suede shoes," said Mrs. Luella Bates
Washington Jones. "You could've just asked me."(Hughes,317,31-32) The reader can
infer from this example in the text that Roger is now being taught that he does not have
to live in such a bad way and he can now change his life.
These two texts provided examples of how something can cause a sudden
change in someone's life. In both texts both Scrooge's and Roger's life changes so that they could live a better life than before. What could be the last concluding sentence?
