Jean-Baptiste Lamarck was a scientist who published his own ideas about evolution in 1800. He suggested that if an organ is used it will become stronger, and if it is not used it will weaken and may disappear in future generations. Using giraffes as an example, Lamarck suggested that a giraffe will develop a longer neck through stretching to reach leaves from higher branches and pass on this trait to its offspring.
