A 45 year-old patient is scheduled for the ambulatory surgical center to have an INFUSAID pump installed. He has primary liver cancer and the pump is being inserted for continuous administration of 5-FU. The right subclavian vein was cannulated without difficulty and the guidewire passed centrally to the superior vena cava under fluoroscopic guidance. The catheter was then advanced over the guidewire to the superior vena cava. The subcutaneous pocket was created in the chest wall. A subcutaneous tunnel was created and the catheter passed through the tunnel. The central venous catheter was placed and connected to the secured pump. The pump was filled with the chemotherapy agent provided by the hospital. The pump was set to administer the 5-FU over the next 12 hours while the patient was observed in the infusion center.
