The system for the rule of law in the United States is established in the U.S. Constitution. It became the law of the land more than 200 years ago. Our understanding of how the Constitution shapes our rights and responsibilities has changed over time. As circumstances and public opinion change through the years, so too do the interpretations offered by the courts. From time to time, it even becomes necessary to amend or change the Constitution to keep up with changes in the country’s beliefs and values.
