Many countries today are called democracies. In a democracy, people can vote. They choose
leaders this way. In democracy, fair elections are important. People must be able to vote. They
can pick the leaders they want. The government cannot control this. It cannot tell people how to
vote. And it cannot control the results of a vote. The elections must be honest. That is not all it
takes to be a democracy. There are other important ideas involved. The government must
believe in these ideas. It must act on them as well.
