Washington was 64 years old and suffering from ills both physical and political. Plagued
by painful dentures and other ailments, and facing increasing attacks from opponents of
his policies, the former Revolutionary War general decided he would not seek a third
term in the nation’s highest office. He and his longtime friend and protégé, Alexander
Hamilton, drafted a farewell address. The 32 page document was printed in
Philadelphia’s American Daily Advertiser on September 19, 1796, and included three
main principles.
