"Now Dean shows up to ruin everything,” he thought as he checked his gear one last time. "Dean knows nothing about dogs. He simply spent a whole bunch of money to buy a top team and a fancy sled.” Just thinking about that made Jake so burning mad that he didn’t even notice the temperature drop to two below zero.

The blog posts of the last week had only made matters worse. Jake and Dean were the two youngest mushers in this year’s race, so they were the big story on the Internet. Reporters and bloggers had asked to interview both of them, and Jake had mostly talked about his dogs and their care, while Dean had mostly bragged. "Well, I can tell you right now that the only thing Jake will see during our two-week run through the wilderness is the back of my sled,” he had said.
