"Glass Canyons" by David Romtvedt
When President Reagan visited Baltimore,
police pushed a crowd of protesters
down the block and into the street
where, in Baltimore, it's illegal to stand.
Enforcing the law, policemen on horseback
Charged the crowd, trampling one man.
How many horses in the high-rise glass canyons,
galloping through the asphalt streets-
no sun burning through dry air,
no mountain range rising from one plain
and dropping to another,
no smell of sage and dust,
no greasewood, cottonwood, or aspen
Just Baltimore and the policemen
on the backs of horses, driving
them into the crowd.
