HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
To the Editor:
I disagree with an editorial printed in your paper yesterday, "Girls and Boys Treated the Same in the Classroom."
1) An educator myself and an observer of other teachers, I have found that teachers tend to respond to students who call out their answers more often than to students who raise their hands and wait to be called upon.
2) Any teacher will tell you that almost always, it is boys who call out answers and girls who raise their hands.
3) However well-intentioned teachers may be, students quickly perceive that many teachers are going to pay more attention to boys than to girls.
4) Several books and professional articles have addressed this problem.
5) For example, in her book, Reviving Ophelia, Mary Pipher tells how we can strengthen girls to withstand our "girl poisoning culture."
