Delivering bad news takes a lot out of me. So, I'm not comfortable doing it. I usually find myself on two extreme ends. Either I'll be in the business/functional mode of "just deliver the message" and get over it or in an "overly" sensitive mode that makes me drag the message. I realize that I have to be in the middle, i.e., deliver with sensitivity and respect without dragging on the message or being short with someone. My struggle is usually to find this middle lane. I feel good when I can find. It usually comes after several "practice" sessions alone on how I can deliver the message.
Thinking about my comfort level with delivering bad news, I realize that I do better when I deliver the news in person compared to email or by phone. In all these cases, I would practice on how to deliver the news. Seeing the person makes me more comfortable because I can see their reaction and I can respond to it. Not having such an opportunity in the email or phone deliveries makes it harder for me."
