Sedimentary rocks are categorized as clastic, biogenic, or chemical. Specific rock names are determined by their composition, texture, and any other distinctive physical properties. In this activity, you will use your knowledge of sedimentary rocks, and the classification schemes in Tables 1-3 in the introduction, to identify several unknown sedimentary rocks. A summary of common sedimentary rock-forming minerals is also given in Table 5 to help you identify any unfamiliar minerals. PROCEDURE 1. Examine one of the unknown rock samples (samples G-L) with only your eyes, and then with a hand lens. 2. Determine the rock type: clastic, biogenic, or chemical? If you cannot determine the rock type initially, look at the composition column in Tables 1-3 in the introduction to help you narrow it down. Once you have determined the rock type, record it in Table 6 on the Exercise 1 Data Sheet.
