Organisations and occupations in sport and active leisure assignment
Scenario The college careers team require your support researching the organisations and occupations that exist within the sport and active leisure industry.
After looking at a number of sports organisations operating in different sectors and the occupations associated with each, you will look in depth at two different occupations to support the work of the college careers department.
Task 1
Research organisations locally (within Suffolk) that operate a business(es) in the sport/active leisure industry within the following sectors:
• Public sector: Examples include, Crown Pools, Whitton and Gainsborough Sports Centre. Consider benefits such as how accessible each centre is, how affordable each facility is to use etc…
• Private sector: Examples include, David Lloyd Health Club, Avid Climbing Centre. Consider benefits such as the use of the latest equipment, monthly membership schemes etc…
• Voluntary sector: Examples include, Needham Market F.C., Pipers Vale Gymnastics Club, Ipswich YM Rugby Club. Consider benefits such as low cost, community focused, participation driven etc…
• Joint/Dual use: Examples include, Chantry High School/Body and Mind Gym, East Bergholt Sports Centre/Abbeycroft Leisure. Consider benefits such as improved usage, links between educational providers and industry etc…
Task 2
Research two occupations in the sport and active leisure industry that interest you. Occupations you could carry out research into could include:
• Sports assistant
• Fitness Instructor
• Personal Trainer
• Community coach
• PE teacher
• Physiotherapist
• Sports therapist
• Performance analyst
• Strength and conditioning coach
For each of the careers you have chosen to explore, you need to carry out research into the following:
• Responsibilities of each role, this could include; customer care, ensuring high level performance, increasing participation, health and safety, safeguarding.
• Skills required for each role, which could include; communication, motivation, time management, leadership, organisation.
• Requirements of each occupation, which may include; qualifications and training, DBS, first aid, level of experience.
For each occupation you must explain the advantages and disadvantages of the role. Consider factors such as; pay, working hours, working days, flexibility of working patterns, if outdoor work is required.
Evidence you must produce for this task
A written report comparing different sports organisations with an explanation of the occupations associated with some of the organisations operating in the sport and active leisure industry.
