You are a claims advisor working for Travelers Insurance. You have been doing your job quite well and managing your time as efficient as possible, however the work keeps piling up and you fall yourself playing catch up. In all of your efforts, you make the best with what you have. You complete your files to the best of your responsibilities, and ask for help when it’s needed. You have never gone outside of your authority level as it could lead for immediate dismissal. Your co-worker gives you a bit of bad news. They are leaving the company to go to a competitor. You get called in to your boss’s office to be advised of the news, and your boss now assigns you to complete all of their open files, on top of yours. As an adjuster you have a duty and responsibility not only to the insurance company, but also to the clients who are making claims. During the claims process, claims must be processed in the highest care, fiduciary duty and be completed within a certain period of time. A couple weeks go by, and you are flustered at work. Your desk is consumed by paperwork and you are not able to respond to your e-mails in a timely and organized manner. You are constantly being interrupted by phone calls and emails by claimants asking when they are going to receive their money. You also realize that you have a long-awaited vacation period coming up next week (which you are very much looking forward to). You get a very angry phone call in the middle of the week. The client has not received a response from you. The claim is for an automobile accident 3 weeks ago, and there hasn’t been an investigation open. You notice that while there are some inconsistencies with their story. You cannot close the claim nor do you want to pay this total loss. The amount is out of your authority and you have not disclosed this information to your manager. Part I (30 marks) What are some of the problems you are facing, and how would you resolve them. Provide some suggestions you would pitch to your boss to alleviate some of the work and stress you have been going through. Put together a 1,000-word document to express the feelings of pressure, stress and conflicts you feel will come up in the near future if this matter isn’t resolved. Express the level of concern for you as the individual, the department and the company overall. Part II (30 marks) What are some of the ethical issues you face as an individual? What are ethical issues the company could face if no resolution in place? Explain in a 500-word document some of the issues, and how they can be resolved. Use at least 3 online references to support your work, and references to course material. Part III (20 marks) You have filed to meet one or more of your deadlines. You have addressed your concerns with your manager who has not addressed the issue. They have advised they are looking at hiring someone, but due to the tight job market, candidates are hard to find. Discuss the interpersonal, intrapersonal and intergroup conflicts you are facing.
