A typical stop sign is about 9.5 feet tall.
a. Use a ruler and the sighting method described in activity 1 in this activity set to estimate the length of a typical city block. With a partner, stand on one end of the block, sight the top and base of a stop sign using a ruler and your thumb, and measure the distance from your eye to the ruler. Estimate the length of the block using similar triangles. Include clearly labeled triangles with your solution. Explain you're thinking.
b. Use the scout sighting method described in activity 2 in this activity set to estimate the same city block length you estimated in part a. Use your personal scout ratio as determined in activity 2c as your scaling factor. Include clearly labeled diagrams of your work and explain which second object you used to set up the similar triangles. Explain your thinking.
