Lockwood and his associate Larry DeBrey made several

treacherous trips to the remote glaciers. Finally, on their

fourth expedition, they discovered the rare specimens

they were looking for. Their examination of the remains of

locusts buried in layers of glacier ice confirmed that locust

plagues were likely to have been an aspect of the prairies

for centuries before the pioneers came, and that the
