Many great inventions were only possible because of earlier discoveries. Thomas Davenport patented
the first electric motor in 1837. But before that, he had to learn about electromagnets, which William
Sturgeon had invented in 1825. Electromagnets allowed Davenport to build an electric motor.
Likewise, Davenport's electric motor allowed other inventors to create even newer machines. For
example, electric motors are used in modern household items like hair dryers and garage-door
openers.
